Premiership Magpie Returns As General Manager

The Port Adelaide Football Club will welcome four-time premiership player Brian Leys back to Alberton as general manager (SANFL).

Leys is returning to take charge of the Magpies, after spending the past two-and-a-half years as chief executive officer of the Perth Football Club in the WAFL.

In a five-year career at Port Adelaide (1995-99), Leys played 91 SANFL games and was a member of four Magpies premiership teams (1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999). He was recruited to Alberton from Richmond where he played 110 VFL/AFL games between 1988 and 1994.

Port Adelaide chief executive officer Keith Thomas said Leys would bring a unique combination of football and management knowledge to the role.

“Brian has been successful as a football administrator and as a player, and he knows the culture of the Port Adelaide Football Club and community as well as anyone,” Thomas said.

“He is perfect for this role and we are as excited as Brian is that he’s returning to Alberton to take up the position. Port Adelaide will benefit greatly from the strengths and experience Brian will bring as Magpies general manager.

“We look forward to having him on board as we embark on the 2012 season and beyond. Brian will be a brilliant asset as we build on the momentum we have across the whole club, particularly as a result of the One PAFC reunification.”

Prior to taking up the role at the Perth Football Club, Leys worked in management roles with Qantas and also owned and operated a successful personal training business.

44-year-old Leys will relocate to Adelaide with wife Sherri and their young sons, Jack and Max, to officially start with the club on Monday 16 April.

Leys takes up the post from Neil Rawlings who has resigned from the role to take up a new employment opportunity.
